This or Something In Between examines the inherent conflict between built and natural environments. Since relocating to this region, I felt a tension between the unquestionable beauty of the high desert and the reality of its environmental and ecological challenges. As I observe the changing light across the Basin and Range topography, between the valleys and basins, jagged mountain ranges, or sandy arid floors, I remind myself that the increasing shifts within this geography are a microcosm. Here, human-made impacts with added changing climates of increased record-breaking temperatures, countered with extremes: droughts, wildfires, and a decreased snowpack that further diminishes water sources for local communities and ecosystems collectively disrupt life and native habitats.
